Observation Narrative
Plot location: swampy area between Bartons Creek and Rt. 629, 1.0 km NE of High Acre Ridge Summit. Not permanently marked. No surface rocks present.
The habitat of this plot is a small stream bottom saturated by extensive lateral groundwater seepage from the base of adjacent slopes. The plot is situated on the east side of the main stream channel, and is traversed by a small rill emanating from a spring outside the plot. Within the site, microtopography, hydrologic conditions, and soil composition are quite heterogeneous and create microhabitats for both obligate wetland species (e.g., in rills and hollows) and upland mesophytic plants (e.g., on better-drained hummocks). The overall vegetation is a mixed palustrine forest. Symplocarpus foetidus is the dominant herbaceous species here and in many similar habitats throughout the Bull Run Mountains. Chelone glabra was heavily damaged by herbivory.
